Obituary of Douglas Jon Cankar

Douglas Jon Cankar, 74, of Winthrop Harbor, IL died Sunday, March 12, 2017 at home. He was born March 17, 1942 to John and Estelle Cankar (nee Ranta) in Waukegan, IL and graduated from Waukegan High School and Lake Forest College Management School. Doug married Diane Tahtinen on March 26, 1966 in Waukegan. He was a faithful member of Lakeview Church in Zion, IL where he was involved in many different ministries. He retired from Outboard Marine, after 35 years, as a Warranty Manager. Doug then worked at Midwestern Regional Medical Center for 20 years as the Director of Transportation. Doug was a friend to everyone and a jokester who made everyone laugh. He was a kind and generous person who will be missed by many. Survivors include his wife, Diane Cankar (nee Tahtinen); children, Denise (Christopher) Olson, Dana (David) Martin, and Donny Cankar; grandchildren, Jordan Olson, Alyssa Olson, Zachary Olson, Seth Martin, Reagan Martin, Kayla Burgmeier, Wesley (Chelsea) Burgmeier, and Haley (Arturo Martinez) Burgmeier; sister, Anita (Alan) Peebles; brother-in-law, Michael Braun; nieces, nephews, and special friends, Gene and Kaye Anthony, Todd and Kelly Burgmeier. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Estelle Cankar; sisters, Kay Ohlson and Connie Braun; and brother-in-law, Richard Ohlson. A celebration of life will take place Friday, March 17, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Lakeview Church, 1821 Sheridan Rd, Zion, IL. Friends may greet the family from 4:00 until the time of service at the church. Interment will be private for the family. Memorial donations in Doug’s name to Lakeview Church or Assistance in Healthcare, P.O. Box 396, Zion, IL 60099 have been suggested.
