Martin “Marty the Sign Painter” Stanonik, 81, of Beach Park, IL passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Marty was born December 12, 1939 in Waukegan, IL to Peter Stanonik and Catherine Mitchell. October 24, 1959 he married Charlene “Sue” Hogsett; together they shared 57 years of marriage. He started his sign painting career at the age of 14; he owned and operated Marty’s Sign Co. in Waukegan for over 50 years. In 1985, he and Sue purchased Red’s Roller Rink in Kenosha, WI and continued to operate it as Great Skate until 2007.
Marty is survived by his children, Marty Stanonik II of Waukegan, IL, Kelly (Al) Stanonik-Ciepluch of Kenosha, WI, Kris Stanonik of Beach Park, IL, and Heather (Justin Spino) Stanonik of Kenosha, WI; seven grandchildren, Zac Stanonik, Sydney (Josh Jankowski) Stanonik, Elizabeth (Joshua) Kramsky, Kimberly (Craig) Ogren, David (Greg Sommers) Ciepluch, Zander Spino, and Gavin Spino; four great-grandchildren, Ariana, Nora, Emma and Ashton; sister, Cindy Harvey; and many nieces and nephews.
Marty served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1977.
Marty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlene “Sue” Stanonik; parents, Peter and Catherine Stanonik; brother, Peter James Stanonik III; and brother-in-law, Robert “Ken” Harvey.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brian Hettrick for his many years of care and JourneyCare Hospice for their compassionate care, especially CNA Frances, Chaplain Tim and Nurse Carey.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 10, 2021 at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL 60099 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
Donations can be made, in Marty’s name, to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
