William A. “Bill” Matz, 73, passed away February 18, 2020 in Nashville, TN. Bill was born April 12, 1946 to William and Ina Matz in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Waller High School (now Lincoln Park High School) in Chicago, IL and attended Truman College in Chicago, IL. Bill was a Veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a Combat Medic in Vietnam (4th Infantry Division) from Oct. 1966 to Sept. 1967. He was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 30 years until he retired. He moved to Poplar Bluff, MO before relocating to Nashville, TN to live closer to his family. He is survived by his son, John W. Matz; his grandchildren, Iris Matz, and Phoebe Matz; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth; father, William; mother, Ina (Hill); brothers, George Owens, Jasper “Jay” Owens; and sister Marlene Skowronski (Owens). A Visitation will be held Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, Illinois 60099. Bill will be laid to rest at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations can by made in Bill’s name to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
