Alfred Edson McElroy, 101, of Zion, IL passed away on March 22, 2025 in Riverwoods, IL.
Alfred was born on May 2, 1923 in Zion, IL the son of Richard and Louana (Mill) McElroy. After graduating from Zion Benton High School he served in the Army during World War II as a B17 pilot. He married Marian McDowell on February 16, 1946 at Grace Missionary Church, where he attended for several years. Once returning from the Army he worked as a printer for Nosco, and Burgess, Anderson & Tate. After retiring from Nosco he worked with his brother Clinton doing small remodeling jobs in the Lake County area. In his spare time he enjoyed flying and building his own Stits Playmate aircraft in his barn.
Alfred is survived by his son, Thomas Edson (Sally) McElroy; grandchildren, Richard Thomas (Kari) McElroy, Scott Edson McElroy, Jason (Abril) Staton, Rebecca (Alyssa) Staton-Rickey, Leah (Eric) Miller; eight great-grandchildren; nephews, Mike (Donna) McDowell, Mark (Ruth) McDowell, Jack (Christy) Studebaker, Jeff (Joanne) Studebaker; nieces, Connie (Bob) Langlois, Suzi (Mark) Mehlig, Debby (the late Ivan) Witts, Chris (Debbie) Ruchti, Mike (Robin) Ruchti, and John (Renee) Ruchti.
Alfred was preceded in death by his son, Richard George McElroy; wife, Marian McElroy; and brother Clinton McElroy.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion, IL.
