Dr. Annette "Sue" H. Hart of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Lake Forest Hospital after a short illness. She was born and raised in Chicago the younger of two siblings of Otto and Anna Kahle. Both of her parents and her brother, George, preceded her in death. She married Hugh Hart in 1945 and moved to Lake County in 1950. Annette had a life long interest in education. She earned a BA degree from Carthage College and a MA degree and Doctor of Philosophy from Northwestern University. She was active as a substitute teacher in the Waukegan school system for several years until she returned to Carthage as a professor in the Education Department. Dr. Hart was Chairperson of the Education Department, and director of both the Elemental Instructional Program and the Graduate Reading Program. She has written extensively on topics in elementary education. Annette stressed the integration of arts, crafts, games, puppets, computers and other activities to reinforce the learning of classroom lessons. She was the teacher certification officer for the college. During her tenure at Carthage, Dr. Hart served on many College committees and boards including the Outreach Program, Education Consortium, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kohl's Teacher Center, Wilmette, Illinois and Teacher Center Burlington, Wisconsin. Dr. Hart retired from Carthage in 1989 and was elected to the rank of Professor Emeritus by the executive board of the college. She was also elected into the Southeastern Wisconsin Educator's Hall of Fame in 1991. Annette remained active during her retirement enjoying travel, craft projects, and bridge clubs. She is survived by Hugh, her husband for more than 64 years and by her son, Dr. Timothy Hart and his wife Cathy of Glendale, Wisconsin, their two children, Kyla and Spencer, and by Timothy's daughter, Adrienne Hart; her sister-in-law Vivian Kahle of Wilmette, Illinois: as well as many friends and relatives in Illinois, Wisconsin and elsewhere. She is also survived by her beloved yorkie, "Georgie". A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 824 N. Lewis Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois, with Pastor Brad Davick officiating. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Office of College Relations, Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53140.
