Bernie Ackerman, 85, of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, formerly of Zion, Illinois, died on Friday, July 30, 2010.
Bernie was born August 27, 1924 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and grew up in Neenah, Wisconsin. As a Veteran, Bernie served his country in the United States Navy during World War II where he was a gunner aboard an L.S.T. at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 and he served during the Korean Conflict from 1947 to 1952. Bernie retired as a painter from Civil Service at Great Lakes, Illinois. He was a member of Christ Community Church of Zion. Bernie was also a member of Zion-Benton American Legion Post 865 where he served as Post Commander from 1974 to 1976 and the Zion-Benton Jay Cee's.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Charlotte; children, Shelley Hoffman of Springfield, Illinois, Grant Ackerman of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Jennie (Mark) Rdzok, Lara (Kenneth) Lee, and Quinton (Lisa) Ackerman all of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, Erin, Amber, Adam, Kayla, Karileigh, Micah, Anna, Quinton Jr., and Tyler; and one great-grandchild, Addie.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Walter; and his parents, Walter and Marie Ackerman.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 5, 2010, from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion, Illinois, where a funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Pastors Ken Langley and Jon Wiziarde officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Memorial donations to Christ Community Church, or to the family, have been suggested.
