Carl Hough

1928 — December 31, 2012

Carl William Hough died peacefully in his Colorado Springs home on 31 December 2012. Carl's death followed his wife, Betty's, passing in April 2012. He went into eternity to be with his Lord, his wife, his family, and the many friends he had from the four places he called home - - Zion, Il., New Port Richey, FL, Port Richey, FL, and Colorado Springs, CO. Carl was born on 3 June 1928. He grew up in Zion, the third of 5 sons and two sisters. He graduated from Zion High School in 1948 having lettered in football and track. Carl also grew up working alongside his father in the family machine shop, which led him to a long career as a machinist first at American Can and, when that closed, at Johns Manville in Waukegan. He trained and served as a volunteer firefighter at Johns Manville. For many years, Carl worked at both Johns Manville and at the family machine shop on Wadsworth Road in Beach Park. Following high school, Carl joined the Navy Reserves, serving at Glenview Naval Air Station from 1948 to 1957. He married Betty (Schmitz) in 1950. With his father's help Carl built his home in Beach Park. Their daughter, Sandy, was born in 1953, their son, Steve, in 1960. The family attended Grace Missionary Church and, later, Christian Catholic Church in Zion during which Carl and Betty enjoyed many years of fellowship with a quite active great group of friends. He retired from Johns Manville in November 1987 and by Thanksgiving they moved to New Port Richey, FL. The water and the palm trees which surrounded their home on Treasure Drive brought hours of both pleasure and upkeep work. They were active at First Baptist Church in New Port Richey where, once again, they joined their Sunday School class in dozens of activities, including one of their favorites, travelingby boat or bus, it didn't matter. Wherever it led, they were happy to be going. Following Spring 1993's No-Name Storm of the Century, which flooded their home and caused extensive damage, they moved a mile inland in Port Richey. It was while living here Carl fought successful battles with colon and liver cancer. It was also here when Parkinson's came into Carl's lifesomething he would deal with for the rest of his life and from which he would eventually die. Carl and Betty moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 2010 to be nearer his son and family and also because of their deteriorating health. He joined Masonic Lodge 78 in Waukegan in 1983 attending Lodge meetings while living in both Florida and Colorado. Carl joins his wife, Betty, brothers Frank, Paul, Robert, Kenny, and his sister, Donna Kaye, in death. He is survived by his sister Diane, his daughter Sandy, son in law Rick, his son Steve, daughter-in-law Denise, and his two grandkids, Katherine and Rachel. A funeral service will be held at Congdon Funeral Home in Zion, IL on January 8th 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private for the family. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl's name to Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care, 5450 Tech Center Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80919.
