Darlene Hammond

Darlene Hammond, 85, of Beach Park, IL, died Sunday March 3, 2013 at home following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born September 15, 1927 in Zion. Darlene was a lifelong member of Christ Community Church of Zion. She worked for many years in Zion as a Beautician. In later years she selflessly gave of her time and energy as a volunteer at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan. She was also an active member of the Zion's Women's Club. Born into a musical family, Darlene loved singing, and often performed as a soloist for the Zion Orchestra. She will be remembered not only for her passion for music and beautiful singing voice, but also for her love and dedication to her family. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, David; children David (Jeanne) Hammond Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and Pat (Lino) Martínez of Wadsworth, IL; four grandchildren Michael (Kristen) Martínez, Justin (Sarah) Hammond, Jennifer (Tom) Mietus, and Lindsey Hammond; five great-grandchildren Madison and Allie Mietus, Alex and Zack Martínez, and Henry Hammond; and one brother Wayne (Jane) Beem of Beach Park, IL. She was preceded in death by siblings Margueritte "Mickie" Brock and Bernard "Bernie" Beem; and her parents George and Esther Beem. Visitation will be Saturday, March 9, 2013, from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Church with Pastor Jon Wiziarde officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Memorial donations to either Christ Community Church, or Greater Illinois Chapter Alzheimer's Association have been suggested.
