Douglas "Andy" Andersen, 74, of Zion, died on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion.
He was born June 24, 1933 in Walnut, Illinois. He served 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring in 1972 at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. While in the Navy, Andy spent time aboard ships out of Norfolk and Long Beach and he served one year in Vietnam. Later he retired from the Zion Post Office after 18 ½ years. He also worked for several years at Payson Casters in Gurnee as the plant custodian, retiring due to poor health. He was also a member of Zion-Benton American Legion, V.F.W., F.R.A., T.R.E.A., and North Prairie United Methodist Church in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gayle; one daughter Brenda (Steven Kennedy) Alexander of Zion; two granddaughters Stacy Cenni of Phoenix, Arizona and Elisha Alexander of Zion; one sister Joan (Donald) Sitterly of Oak Park, Illinois; and one niece and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Geraldine (nee Bowen) Andersen.
Visitation will be Monday, July 30, 2007, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at North Prairie United Methodist Church, 9th Street and Kenosha Road, Winthrop Harbor. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Dr. Ron Greene, Pastor, officiating. A visitation will also be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Garland Funeral Home, 14733 IL Hwy 92, Walnut, Illinois 61376 with burial immediately following at Walnut Cemetery. Memorial donations to either North Prairie United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society have been suggested.
