Elmer Ellsworth Martin, 91 years old, formerly of Morrison, Illinois died peacefully at Methodist Hospital in Peoria with his loving family present on September 16, 2012. Elmer was born January 10, 1921 in Devereaux, Michigan. He was a graduate of Albion High School, Albion, Michigan. He married Lois Ella Leable on October 12, 1945 in Waukegan, IL. Elmer was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy from 1944- 1946. He was a member of the Lions Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce and served on many committees at the Morrison United Methodist Church. He enjoyed travel across the country and abroad. He began working at General Electric in 1956 and retired in 1984. As a manufacturing engineer at GE, he was the coordinator between the Singapore plant and the Morrison plant. He designed and developed the range timer and was one of the engineers who developed and held a patent for a miniature motor. He was also a member of a group that established a new GE plant in Malaysia.
He is survived by two daughters; Linda (the Rev. Craig) Miller of Peoria, Il; Sandra (Thom) Coyle of Aptos, CA, and a son; James (Cheryl) Martin of Easton, CO; two brothers; Ron (Eleanor) Martin of LaGrange, IL and Ray (Dorothy) Martin of Devereaux, MI; and a brother-in-law; Phil (Margaret) Leable of Zion, IL; 9 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and his special friend Carol Morgan, Lansing, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; a daughter, Sally Stroud; a grandson, Brad Miller, and two brothers, Lawrence and Wendell Martin.
Family and Friend visitation will be Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL, followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Norval Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Rest Cemetery, Russell, IL. A memorial has been established to the Morrison United Methodist Church.
