Gilbert Bennett

Gilbert L. Bennett, 83, of Wadsworth, IL passed away at his home on August 29, 2014. Gilbert was born October 20, 1930. He grew up in Zion and was a resident of Wadsworth for 53 years. Gilbert married Carolyn Cerk on July 10, 1954 at St. Patrick's Church in Wadsworth. He served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion for 60 years. Gilbert worked many years for Akzo (formerly Reliance). He was active in the community having served on the board for Community Trust Credit Union for 36 years; the Village of Wadsworth Zoning Board; and the Oakdale Cemetery Association. He was an avid Railroad buff and enjoyed cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. Gilbert is survived by his children Gilbert (Kathy) Bennett Jr of Racine, WI, Mark (Cindy) Bennett of Lisle, Jonathan (Anita) Bennett of Lake Villa, Mary (Carl) Williams of Corfu, NY, Christine (Phil) Meade of Reston, VA, and Daniel Bennett of Wadsworth; ten grandchildren James, Mary, Terri, Dan, David, Michael, Ryan, Dustin, Amanda and Elizabeth; one great-grandchild Hazel; brothers Howard (Joy) Bennett and Don (Diana) Bennett; and sister Shirley (Wes) Colwell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his son, Stephen; and his parents Lewis and Bessie (nee Johnson) Bennett. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. with a service at 7:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery, Zion, IL.
