Harold R. Juhola, 75, of Zion, IL, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, at the Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion.
Harold was born May 23, 1932, in Ashtabula, Ohio, and married Janet Burnham on February 24, 1968, in Long Beach, CA. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1972. Harold served two tours in Korea and Viet Nam and served in Operation Deep Freeze, the first U.S. Naval exploration of Antarctica. He was awarded 6 medals, the Armed Forces Expeditionary, Antarctic Service, National Defense, Viet Nam Service, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign, and Navy Good Conduct.Upon retirement from the Navy he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Harold then retired in 1996 after 35 years of employment with the Great Lakes Naval Base Public Works Department as Director of Facilities Inspection. He was a past Commander of the Zion VFW, and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Harold was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church in Beach Park, and did volunteer work for Our Lady of Humility School as a coach and an event co-ordinator. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a friend to all.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Janet Juhola; sons, Cordell (Lori) Juhola of Prophetstown, IL, and Scott (fiancé, Michelle Andersen) Juhola of Salem, WI;
grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, and Jordan Juhola, and Brooke Andersen; beloved sister, Joanna Juhola of Ashtabula, Ohio; brother and sister-in- law , Don and Leatrice Bruns of Spencer, S.Dak.; niece Beth Kayser, of Alexandria, S. Dak.;
and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Margaret Juhola, and a nephew, Brad Bruns.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 16, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 W. Wadsworth Rd., Beach Park. Entombment will follow at Warren Cemetery, Gurnee, Ill. Visitation will be Friday, June 15, 2007, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Our Lady of Humility Church or the American Lung Assoc., 1440 W. Washington Blvd. Chicago, IL 60607 are suggested.
