Henry Baez Sr.

November 3, 1947 — July 6, 2024

Winthrop Harbor

The Baez family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father, Henry Baez Sr. However, they find great comfort in knowing that this man of God is now in His presence. Henry, a devout Christian, a proud patriot, a loving husband, a cherished father, a beloved brother, a favorite uncle, and a great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2024, at Condell Medical Center. Uncle Henry was born in Juncos, Puerto Rico, in 1947. His life was a testament to hard work and unwavering faith. Henry's dedication to his family and his service to his country as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces were hallmarks of his character. For nine years, he and his wife, Rebecca, bravely fought terminal illness, with his final conscious moments spent sharing storytime with all his grandchildren.

Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Rebecca (Medel), his high school sweetheart. Their love story stands as an example to all. They lived their wedding vows in every sense, steadfastly supporting each other "in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer." Their love only grew deeper, embodying the true essence of marriage. Their union is a shining example of what it means to love your spouse, to love unconditionally, and to stand by each other till death. Henry leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish their time together. His children: Nina (Scott) Mezatis, Brett and Luke; Jamie Baez (Kevin McCaskey), Madeline Baez McCaskey; Jay (Karina Villa), Melanie and Henry Jay; and Brandon (Carrie), Anna, Sam, and Benjamin. In 2020, Henry was introduced to a great-grandchild, Melody Grace Baez. He is also survived by his sister Carmen (Angelo) Perez and his brother Evelio (Anne) Baez and many loved nieces and nephews. His legacy of love and devotion endures through his family, who will continue to honor his memory and the values he instilled in them. He was preceded in death by his father and mother (Miguel and Juanita Baez) and his in-laws (Robert and Esther Medel), as well as many beloved family members.

Services will be held at Wesley Free Methodist Church in Waukegan Ill. (3601 N. Lewis Ave.) on Wednesday July 10. Visitation will be held from 4-5 with services starting at 5 and officiated by Pastors Tim Huang and W. Carl Brannon.
