Herman S. Holcomb was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on May 4, 2016, at the age of 94, with his wife Louise at his side.
Herman was born in Belmont, MS on December 11, 1921 to Carrie and Arthur Holcomb. He married Lillian Louise Gilmore on August 16, 1941 in Tupelo, MS, who remained the love of his life for almost 75 years.
Herman served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1945 during WWII. He moved his family to the Beach Park area in 1950. He retired from H&S Manufacturing in Antioch as a Superintendent in 1986.
Herman was a founding member of the Zion Church of God of Prophecy (now Lakeside Community Church.) The building’s cornerstone bears his name, and his Faith was the cornerstone of his life.
He is survived by his wife Louise, their two children Rebecca Thorn (Charles) and Wade Holcomb, daughter-in-law Jane Holcomb, five grandchildren: Vicki, Valerie, Sherry (Chris), Shelley (Pat), Rhonda (Joe), seven great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Herman was preceded in death by his mother Carrie, his father Arthur, four sisters: Ina Holcomb, Euna Holcomb, Sybil Stacy and Irene Stacy, twin brother Sherman Holcomb, and brother Leland Holcomb.
Herman’s greatest joys were serving the Lord and spending time with his family.
Visitation will be held Tuesday May 10th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., a funeral service will follow at 1:00pm at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL 60099. A private entombment will be held later at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in his name to the Lakeside Community Church, 1801 Hermon Ave., Zion, IL 60099.
