John Johnson

John V. Johnson Sr., 92, of Zion, IL, formerly of Maywood, IL, died peacefully on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at home, surrounded by family. John was born September 22, 1920, in Zion and graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. He was a member of the North Shore Bible Chapel in Zion. John was a U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from American Motors in Kenosha in 1983 and was an active member of the UAW. John was also a skilled carpenter and mason. John was an avid motorcyclist and pilot of small planes. He also loved taking his family on long summer cross country vacations. Survivors include his wife, Zelphia; children, John V. Johnson Jr. of Erie, IL, Joni V. (Edward B.) Schimenti of Zion, Jann (Kevin) Parker of Zion, J'laine Johnson of Zion, and Angela (Melvin) Harris of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, John V. Johnson III, Erica Titus, Edward J. Schimenti, Geoffrey Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Victoria Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Jennifer Parker, David Johnson, and Gabrielle Johnson; 10 ½ great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James V. Johnson and his mother, Nonnie Mounce Johnson; first wife, Harriette V. Johnson; second wife, Jean Van Lear-Johnson; and sisters, Blossom, Marion, Helen, Martha, and Charlotte. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
