John G. Vanderlaan, 51, of Gurnee, IL died on Friday, May 18, 2012 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL.
John was born April 14, 1961 in Grand Haven, MI and has been a resident of Gurnee since 1996. He retired in July 1999 as a HT1 at Great Lakes following 20 years of honorable service in the United States Navy. He was a Veteran of Desert Storm having served in the Gulf on board the USS Platte. Currently he was employed as a corrections officer with the Lake County Sheriffs Department. John was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and he belonged to H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) and Lake Shore Chapter of H.O.G.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Susan; children Patricia LeMaster of Gurnee, IL, Gina Henry of Gurnee, IL, Christopher Vanderlaan of Caro, MI, Justin Scaife of Antioch, IL, and Erin Fleet of Detroit, MI; nine grandchildren Kyle, Kamren, Kennedy, Jaclynn, Caitlynn, Madelynn, Zavary, Skylar, and Audrea; his father Gary (Sandy) Vanderlaan of Muskegon, MI; his mother Judith Vanderlaan of Muskegon, MI; one brother Scott (Debra) Vanderlaan of Muskegon, MI; and one sister Barbara Jones of Fremont, MI.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Vanderlaan in 2011.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 22, 2012, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd, at 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion.
