Joyce Marie Shelley, of Wadsworth, IL passed peacefully Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Aurora Medical Center, Kenosha, WI, surrounded by her family. She was born February 1, 1933 in Wadsworth to the late Kless and Elizabeth Gyzen. Joyce was the founder of the Shanty Restaurant in Wadsworth and enjoyed many friendships throughout the years. She played a significant role in the Village of Wadsworth as Village Clerk, Plan Commission Chairman, and Village Trustee and was instrumental in acquiring the Wadsworth School property that is now being used as the Wadsworth Village Hall. In addition, Joyce was proudest of overseeing the success of the Newport Township Historical Society. She was a gifted artist, specializing in oil painting, and also enjoyed socializing, reading, cooking, golf, bowling, card playing, gardening, and, like her mother, had an appreciation for the wildlife that visited her yard. Preceded in death by her husband George P. Shelley, in 2001, she is survived by: her children Patrick Shelley (Lindy), Sandy Bassler (William), Wendy Nerroth (Butch), Michael Shelly (Cindy), Robert Pocius (Marilyn), Susie Anthony (the late Earl), Barbara Erlin (Bernie), Thomas Shelley (Sandy Kuebker); her grandchildren Zane Shelley, Kimberly Shelley, Casey Bassler (Melissa), Linsay Bassler, Adam Bassler, Kerri Hank (Chris), Stephanie Shelley, John Shelley, Carly Kraft (Dave) and Michael Pocius; her sister Lois Walden (Don); and many nieces and nephews. Interment will be private at Joyce's request. In her memory, donations can be made to the Newport Township Historical Society, P.O. Box 98, Wadsworth, IL, 60083.
