Joyce Linda Wakefield

Joyce Linda Wakefield passed peacefully at home on December 2, 2016 after a brief illness. She was born on August 2, 1956 in Waukegan, the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Wakefield. Joyce was a life-long resident of North Chicago, IL. She attended North Chicago public schools and after graduating from high school, Joyce continued her formal education at Brooks College in Long Beach, CA where she pursued her interest in the fashion industry. She specialized in Fashion Merchandising, graduating with an Associate Degree. Upon her return to North Chicago Joyce obtained employment with AllState Insurance Corporation near Chicago where she was able to capitalize on her organizational and “people” skills. Joyce was with AllState for more than 20 years, but sought employment closer to home in order to spend more quality time with her family. She found new employment with Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, IL as a secretary where she worked for 13 years until becoming ill. Joyce enjoyed cooking, drawing, writing, family gatherings, spending time with her beloved granddaughter, DeSaise and helping people. She had a gentle spirit and a soft spot for animals. It was not unusual for Joyce to bring home a cat or dog that needed a loving home. Joyce leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Demond and Kevin; daughter, Gail; stepdaughters, Sonja, Angela, and April; sister, Wanda (Christopher) Childs; and beloved granddaughter, DeSaise Ratliff. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her father and mother, Arthur and Mary Wakefield, her sister Sandra Rush, brother Arthur, and long-time companion William McGhee. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday December 17, 2016 at Shiloh Baptist Church of Waukegan, 800 S. Genessee St., Waukegan, IL. Visitation will begin at 10:00 with the service starting at 11:00.
