Lee James Fischer, 69, of Winthrop Harbor passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 11, 2011 in Waukegan, IL. Lee was born January 17, 1942 in Aurora, IL, grew up as a pig farmer in Plainfield, IL and moved to Zion in 1963. Lee purchased Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion in 1979. He was active in the Kiwanis Club of Zion-Benton and was on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Cemetery and Funeral Home Association. He was also an active member of the Cremation Association of North America, Metropolitan Chicago Cemetery Officials, and International Cemetery, Crematory and Funeral Association. Lee was a dedicated fireman for the City of Zion and retired from the department in 2003 after 38 years of service. He has always been very dedicated and proud of the friends he served with and those who joined the force after he retired. Lee has always been a dedicated volunteer in our community. He served as President of the ZBTHS Athletic Booster Club, President of the Kiwanis Club of Zion-Benton, served on the board of directors for the Zion Chamber of Commerce, and received the Zion Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award. He enjoyed boating on the chain of lakes in Eagle River, WI and watching the eagles. Lee is survived by his wife, Cheryl Isom Fischer (nee Brockmeyer); three daughters: LeNah Klinger, LeNora (Richard) Lambert, and LeNette (Diel) Van Haverbeke; one son, Lewis Fischer; his mother, Lucille Fischer; brothers-in-law, Loren Congdon, Terry Brockmeyer, Tracy Brockmeyer, Gary Congdon and Michael Welcome; sisters-in-law, Margaret Congdon, Mary Lou Congdon, Pamela Congdon, Ginny Brockmeyer, and Tammy Welcome; a very special mother-in-law, Gert Brockmeyer; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who he loved like children. Lee had six grandchildren who adored him: Alyssa Lambert, Breanna Klinger, Kendal Livingston, Lindsey Lambert, Jake Lambert, and Delainey Van Haverbeke. He also had countless friends and loved ones he held dear. He was preceded in death by his wife, LeAnna Fischer (nee Congdon); his father, Wilber Fischer; in-laws Everett and Evangeline Congdon; brother-in-law Ardsley Congdon; and a very special nephew, Caleb Congdon. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 17 at 11:00 am at North Point Church, 900 Lewis Avenue, Winthrop Harbor, IL, with Pastor Tim Bycroft presiding. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Memorial donations to the Kiwanis Club of Zion-Benton or the City of Zion Fire & Rescue Department have been suggested in lieu of flowers.
