Lester “Les” Powers, 96, of Zion, IL died on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
He was born March 10, 1920 in Taylor, NE, and has lived in the Zion and Winthrop Harbor areas since 1951. He served his country during World War II from 1941 until 1951 in the United States Coast Guard and the Naval Reserves. Lester retired from Johnson Motors in Waukegan after 30+ years as a machinist. He was an avid bird watcher, gardener and carpenter. He loved building bird houses and feeders, working in his garden and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his children Robert (Sandra) Powers of North Platte, NE, Susan (Joseph) Ware of Ft. Worth, TX, David (Heather) Powers of Bristol, WI, and Deborah (Randy) Zeien of McLeansboro, IL; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ernestine “Tiny” Powers in 2010; son Rickey Dale Powers in 1992; mother and father Elmer and Alta Powers; and five brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be Friday, March 18, 2016, from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL, followed by a funeral service at 5:00 p.m. Private interment will be held later. Memorial donations to either Memorial United Methodist Church of Zion, IL, or the American Diabetes Association have been suggested.
