Luis Placa

Luis Placa, 87, of Waukegan, died on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. Luis was born on July 20, 1920 in Mayaguez Puerto Rico and married Juanita Altieri in 1945 in Puerto Rico. He was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church in Beach Park. Luis was a World War II and Korean War veteran. In Korea he served with the 65th Infantry, the most decorated regiment in the war. Luis retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years and then was also retired from the Timex Corp. in Puerto Rico in 1980. He was an avid fisherman. Luis is survived by his children, Nelson (Manuelita) Placa of Kissimmee, FL, Awilda (Milton) Canting of Waukegan, IL, Mildred (Roger) Canting of Puerto Rico and Gaston (Virginia) Placa of Zion, IL; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ana Garcia, Rosita Sola and Genoveva Placa all of Puerto Rico; nieces, Margarita Placa and Maria Victoria Placa both of Puerto Rico; and many nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita in 1986; father and mother, Miguel and Hipolita Placa; and many brothers and sisters. A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, January 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 W. Wadsworth Rd., Beach Park. Luis will have his cremains buried in Puerto Rico National Cemetery with Military honors at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Dept.
