Major Robert Henry Becker, 90, passed away on August 23, 2014 in Zion, IL.
He was born on July 9, 1924 in Elgin, Illinois, to Frances and Henry Becker. Bob proudly and honorably served his country during WWII and the Korean War. Bob received more than 10 medals including the Bronze Star for meritorious achievements in ground operations during the Rhineland Campaign in Europe. Bob also received the Purple Heart and the French Legion of Honor. Bob married Mary Jane "Peppie" Vaganey on June 19, 1947 in Paris, France. Peppie moved to the United Sates and became an American citizen, one thing she was very proud of. Bob was an Eagle Scout and received the Order of the Arrow. Bob was a lifelong member of the Elgin American Legion Post 57.
Bob received his Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University and his Master's Degree from Rutgers University. Bob retired from the United States Air Force after more than twenty years, and started his teaching career. Bob taught in New Jersey and at Zion-Benton High School. He retired in 1987.
Bob and Peppie loved to travel and visited all seven continents and more than sixty countries. They also loved cruising logging in more than 345 days at sea. On August 31, 2011 Bob was able to go on the "Chicago Honor Flight" to Washington DC and said, "It was one of the best experiences of his life."
Bob is survived by his four children: Edward, Phillip (Cindy), Francine (Fiancé Roger Winans), Johanne (Steven) Ahonen. Grandchildren: Jennifer, Brian, Nicole, Melisa, Kimberly, Robert, Christina, Jason, Eric, Aaron and 11 Great-Grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane "Peppie" (Vaganey) 2012; mother Frances (Krunnfusz) 1950, father Henry 1967, and brother William.
Bob had a great life. He loved his wife, family, and country so very much. He will be deeply missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be held on Friday August 29th, 2014 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd, Zion, IL 60099. Interment will follow at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Major Robert H. Becker's name to Chicago Honor Flight (www.honorflightchicago.org) would greatly be appreciated.
