Mary Marie Friedel Magden Zinn, 104, formerly of Waukegan, IL and a current resident of St. Joseph’s Home and Rehabilitation Center in Kenosha, WI died on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.
She was born on August 11, 1912 to Herman and Tacy Friedel in Norma, ND. Mary lived on the prairie in Norma until her family moved to Zion in 1918. She was baptized at the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church (now Christ Community Church) in Zion in 1920. Mary graduated from Zion Preparatory College with the class of 1930.
On September 28, 1934 she married Charles Lee Magden in Waukegan, IL. Charles died on June 25, 1959. They had two children: Charles “Mike” Michael Magden of Waukegan, IL and Janis Magden Zielinski of Pleasant Prairie, WI.
Mary worked at the Zion Department Store for 15 years as a manager and cook in their restaurant. After her marriage to Charles, she worked at Abbott Laboratories and Fansteel in North Chicago, IL. At Fansteel she worked as a machinist.
On December 20, 1963 Mary married Helmut Zinn in Zion, IL. They lived in Waukegan and Helmut died on May 19, 1995.
In her younger years Mary enjoyed painting, knitting, sewing and genealogy. She also enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. Throughout her life, Mary got great enjoyment in remembering her family and friends’ special occasions with cards or letters; and she treasured the cards and remembrances that she received.
Mary will be missed by her family which includes her two children, Charles “Mike” Michael (Carol) Magden and Janis (Burton Sr.) Zielinski. Surviving Mary are her five grandchildren; Burton K. Zielinski Jr. of Milton Freewater, OR, Laura Zielinski of Kenosha, WI, Kevin (Michelle) Magden of Wauconda, IL, Kim Magden Tapley of Fort Worth, TX, and Lynn Magden (Mike) Gunderson of Arlington Heights, IL. Also surviving Mary are her six great-grandchildren; Gunnar Zielinski, Twins Connor and Kelsey Magden, Zoe Tapley, and Ella and Sara Gunderson; and also many special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mary in death are her parents and her brothers Earl (in infancy), Edward, Charles, and Aaron. She is also preceded by her sisters Rose (in infancy), Ann Friedel Stamm (twin of her brother Aaron), and half-sister Darlene Friedel Wasion Tisinger.
Special thanks to Dr. Neil Shepler and his staff, along with the entire staff at St. Joseph’s Home and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care they provided Mary and her family for the past four years. Thanks, too, to Hospice Alliance for their recent care.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m., at Christ Community Church Lloyd Chapel, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion, IL. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the Lloyd Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials in Mary’s name would be appreciated to either Camp Zion, or Christ Community Church.
