Michael E. Mintern, age 78, born August 17th, 1937 at his home in Zion, Il. He went to be with his savior on October 15, 2015 surrounded by the love of his family.
Michael was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and loyal friend. Our hearts are heavy but our smiles will endure as we remember his sense of humor and his never ending smile. Michael was strongly committed to his community. He is a former Republican precinct committee member, City Commissioner for the city of Zion, Moose Lodge 667 Member, 32nd degree mason, and recipient of the Outstanding Young Men of America Award in 1971. Michael leaves a long legacy in the city he called home for 78 years, dating back to 1969 when he was credited for extensive updates to Zion’s Illinois Bell Telephone system to being an active member of the community to present day. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan.
Michael is survived by his wife Shirley, who has also been his care giver for the last 24 years. His children Wendy (Andy) Grom of Winthrop Harbor, Il, Todd (Cathy) Mintern, Wanda Rottmann and daughter-in-law Sally Mintern all of Zion, Il. Sisters Pat (Duke) Lee and Jane (Bob) Neave. His grandchildren Nicole (Surge) Palia, Brandon Grom, Alan Mintern, Becca (Brandon) Orawiec, Michael Rottmann, Mallory Rottmann, and Stephen Mintern. Great Grandchildren Morgan Mintern, Rylin Rottmann and Suri Palia.
Michael was preceded in death by a son Michael (Mickey) Mintern, and his mother and Father Ernest and Ercell Mintern.
A special thanks to his sister-in-law Nelda Nelson, Dr. Engstrom, the staff at Vista East and the Vista Hospice for their special care. Thank you to the Pastoral staff from CCC for all of their spiritual support.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Michael’s church, Christ Community Church in Zion. Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 20th at Christ Community Church 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive Zion, Il from 10:00-11:00am, with a memorial service immediately following in the sanctuary. Interment will be private for the family at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion.
