Muriel R. Ernst (nee Appel), 88, of Kenosha, WI, died on Saturday, February 26, 2011 in Kenosha, surrounded by her family. Muriel was born April 3, 1922 in Youngstown, OH and had lived in Illinois, California and Northern Ireland before moving to Kenosha four years ago from Waukegan. She served as a Sgt. in the United States Marine Corp during World War II from 1943 to 1945. She was a longtime member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Zion where she was involved in Staff Parish, belonged to Church Women United, served as President of Memorial United Methodist Women and sang in the choir. She was also a girl scout leader in California, served with Welcome Wagon in Ohio and sang with the Sweet Adelines in Waukegan. Muriel was an avid bridge player and she enjoyed traveling. Survivors include her children, Barbara (Alan) Havemann of Kenosha, WI, Nancy (Ray) Kiefer of Antioch, IL, and Gordon Ernst Jr. of Morgantown, WV; four grandchildren, Andrew and Alan Grimes and Amy and Angela Havemann; two step-grandchildren, Erika Check and Jill Constante; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Ernst Sr.; two sisters, Adelaide Emch and Catherine Magdeline Winsor Detweiler; one brother, Ira Carl Appel; and her parents, Carl and Catherine Appel. Visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2011, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 2935 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor Kwadwo Ntim and Rev. Paul Gerardy officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Memorial United Methodist Church have been suggested.
