Raymond T. Smith (Smitty), 88, passed away February 4, 2010 at home in Winthrop Harbor. He was surrounded by his family and caregiver.
He was born in Waukegan October 14, 1921 to the late Clifford and Lucy Smith. Ray served In the US Navy and was stationed In Hawaii during WW II. He married Lorraine (nee) Miller, in 1945 and built a home in Winthrop Harbor where they lived and raised their family. Ray was a member of American Legion Post 1187 for years. He was also the Winthrop Harbor electrical Inspector for 23 years. Ray was a union electrician and a member of IBEW Local 150 for 50+ years. He loved boating and camping with his family and was a member of the Winthrop Harbor Boat Club in the 1960's. For many years Ray could be found in his garage filled with power tools working on one of his many "projects". He provided well for his family as an electrician and enjoyed the work.
Ray is survived by his wife, Lorraine, three children, Bill (Kris) Smith, Sherry (Jim) Kantola and Sandy (Marty) Meyer, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Richard. Ray was preceded in death by two brothers, William and David.
The family would like to thank Star Hospice for their caring ministry. They would also thank the two special caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care that were most recently there for Ray. Penny Rohrdanz was with Ray his last two days. Sherrellis Stinnette was with Ray the last seven months. Josie, as we called her, went above and beyond the job description caregiver. We will never forget her.
Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 13, at United Methodist Church, 600 College Ave, Winthrop Harbor. Family and friends are invited to come visit at 9:30 until the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations be made to the United Methodist Church.
