Richard Harvey “Dick” Schultz, 87, of Waukegan, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 15, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He suffered in the last year from Myelodysplastic Syndrome.
Dick was born September 21, 1928 in Paris Corners, Wisconsin. His family later settled in North Chicago, Illinois where he was raised. Dick was a 1946 graduate of Waukegan High School, and that September, enlisted in the Army, serving as a T4 Sergeant during peacetime Korea as a personal chauffeur to Colonel Gillet. After attending the Art Institute of Chicago on his GI bill, Dick was employed by NOSCO, retiring in 1993, just short of 41 years of service. Using his artistic talent, Dick designed NOSCO’s “N” logo, a variation of which is still used today. He was a member of the Lake County Art League.
In August of 1949, Dick met the love of his life, Gloriette M. Peterson, and they married one year later on August, 5, 1950 at Christian Catholic Church in Zion, Illinois. Together, they raised their family in North Chicago until their move in 1969 to Waukegan when they established Gloriette Bridal & Boutique, and he was proudly known as “Mr. Gloriette”. This past August, they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary with their children and grandchildren.
Raised during the Depression, Dick was steadfast, very practical, a man of many talents, be it plumbing, electrical, carpentry, tasks of any nature, Dick accomplished the work himself. He was a man of integrity, generous with his time and love. As a young boy, Dick was a natural-born artist, and after retirement, he found time to draw and paint again. He enjoyed reproducing his artwork onto notecards and sharing them with people.
Dick is survived by his adoring wife, Gloriette; daughter Ardith (Gary) Laine; sons Fred Schultz and Dr. Richard (Debra) Schultz; grandchildren Nikolas (Tiffany McBride) Schultz, Matthew Laine, Paige and Fallon Schultz, all of whom he cherished. He is also survived by his siblings, John (Evelyn) Schultz, Marie Worth and Bill (Doris) Schultz; sisters-in-law Bonnie Epker and Rosemary (Al) Brean; brother-in-law Eric Peterson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Schultz; parents, Fred and Katherine Schultz; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edwin and Mary Peterson; brothers-in-law, Jack Worth and Bob Epker; and nephew Jim Worth.
His brother John has said, “If you ask Dick what time it is, he’ll tell you how to build a watch”. Thank you to anyone and everyone who listened to his stories.
In honoring his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no visitation. Future interment will be at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, Illinois. Memorial donations in his name are suggested to Camp Zion c/o Christ Community Church, Zion, Illinois. Arrangements entrusted to Congdon Funeral Home.
