Richard A. Storey Sr., 96, of Zion, IL died on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Hospitality Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kenosha, WI.
Richard was born November 24, 1920 in Zion. He resided most of his life in Zion, and after his retirement he enjoyed winters in Naples, FL. He graduated from Zion Preparatory College and was a life long member of Christ Community Church of Zion where he ushered for over 40 years and served with the Zion Passion Play in various capacities for over 30 years.
A Veteran, Richard served in the 29th Navy Sea-Bee Battalion during World War II. He retired from Abbott Laboratories in 1981 after 40 years there. Rich had a lot of pleasure playing golf, including getting a hole-in-one. He also enjoyed traveling. Once he drove a 17 day self-directed trip through Great Britain. He also traveled through Europe, including a river boat trip down the three rivers from Amsterdam to Vienna, as well as numerous cruise trips.
Survivors include a son Richard A. (Nancy) Storey Jr. of Grayslake, IL; a daughter Pamela (Robert Jr.) Whitlock of Adel, GA; five grandchildren Teresa (Steve) Ottersen, Robert E. (Anne) Whitlock III, Brandy Whitlock, Ronald M. Shearer Jr., and Dawn M. (Justin) Dyer; nine great-grandchildren Nicholas, Matthew, Cael, Colden, Chase, Brittni, Brandon, Ashley, and Caleb; four step-daughters Kathie (Larry) Davis of Grand Rapids, MI, Diane Cranston of Howell, MI, Anita (Vernon) Freeman of Summerfield, FL, and Sharon (David) Schantz of Brimley, MI, and their children and grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Carol Storey and Jan Storey both of Zion, IL; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Catherine “Kay” Storey; his second wife Byrdine B. Storey; parents Ralph and Ruth (Petreman) Storey; six brothers Victor (Edna), Donald (Polly), C. James (Eleanor), Roger, Burton, and Loren; and five sisters Virginia Wirth, Jessie (Ross) Burgess, Maxine (Ira) Krause, Jean Storey, and Adelle (Ed) Groome.
Visitation will be Monday, January 16, 2017, from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion, IL. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. Mike McDowell officiating. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olviet Memorial Park, Zion. Memorial contributions to Camp Zion, a ministry of Christ Community Church, have been suggested.
