Robert A. Herrmann, who helped comfortably relocate thousands of families as a mover in the Chicago area, died February 8 at age 93.
Mr. Herrmann started in the moving business as a bookkeeper. He switched to the trucks seeking more variety and for more pay for his growing family. He continued handling payroll for various trucking companies part-time. His children recall the sound of his adding machine at night, as Mr. Herrmann worked his side gig from the family kitchen.
Mr. Herrmann learned bookkeeping through the Navy and via DePaul and Marquette universities.
Born in Roselle, New Jersey, he came to Northern Illinois via the Navy, meeting his wife Dorothy Wagner on a blind date. They would settle in Beach Park and raise four children.
Mr. Herrmann was known for his professionalism and skill and particularly liked assisting young Navy families as they transferred in and out of Naval Station Great Lakes. He also enjoyed walking, reading and watching White Sox games.
He was preceded in death by his wife and is survived by his children Peter, LoriLee (Villwock), Andrew and Jenna (Melberg); eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the thoughtful care provided by the Lovell VA Hospital.
