Waukegan, IL

Robert L. Ramey (aka Bernie/ Bob), 94, dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died peacefully at home in Waukegan, IL on June 9, 2024 with his son Michael at his side. 

Robert, of “The Greatest Generation”, was born in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. After graduating from Akron H.S., Akron OH., Robert joined the Army and was stationed in Kitzingen, Germany, where he fondly joked his mission was “to destroy all the beer.” 

On December 5, 1964 Robert married Joan A. Ramey (née Schmidt) of Waukegan, IL. Robert and Joan celebrated 55 happy and adventurous years of marriage on December 5, 2019, shortly before Joan’s passing on January 25, 2020. The inseparable couple is once again together forever. 

Robert was an artist and painter by trade, establishing Ramey Signs. In addition, he worked at International Harvester and the Waukegan DMV. Robert was a dedicated Republican and very active in the party. Robert, aka “Bob the Beast” among friends at the Waukegan Fieldhouse, was a lifelong bodybuilder from high school until his last year. He was an inspiration to many.

Survivors include his brother Charles (Rose) Ramey of Lake Wales, FL ; daughter Kimberley (David) Anderson of Denmark Township, MN; son Michael R. Ramey of Singapore; and two grandsons Rémy (Corrin) Anderson and Ryan (Jessie) Anderson. Robert is also survived by 2 children from Joan’s first marriage whom he raised, daughter Sherry Murphy of Winthrop Harbor, IL; son Robert (Brenda) Westover of Winter Park, FL; two grandchildren Crickett Campbell (Jason), Jason Murphy; two great-grandchildren, Raina Campbell and Skyler (Michaela Garcia) Campbell. And many nieces and nephews.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife Joan; his parents Harry M. and Viola R. Ramey; 3 brothers, Harold “Gene” Ramey, Austin Ramey, Harry Ramey; and 2 sisters, Bonnie Minniear, and JoAnn Carr. Robert will always be in our hearts.
