Velma Welch, 99, of Beach Park, Illinois, died on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at her home.
Velma was born September 7, 1911 in Olive Hill, Tennessee and moved to Zion in 1943 from Itawamba County, Mississippi. She was a member of Zion Church of Christ. Velma retired in 1976 from Abbott Labs after 27 years and prior to that had taught grade school in Itawamba County and she worked for the WPA in Mississippi. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing and took great pleasure in giving her items away.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jennie (George) Sargent of Bolivar, Tennessee and Glenda (Elton) Crowe of Beach Park, Illinois; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1955; her son, Billy in 2003; and by her ten siblings.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 18, 2010, from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, with a funeral service to follow at 1:30 p.m., David Padfield of Zion Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow at Northshore Garden of Memories, North Chicago.
