Winfield Reed

Winfield J. Reed, 96, of Zion, IL, died on Friday, December 2, 2011 at home. He was born September 12, 1915 in Kansas City, Kansas and came to Zion in 1924. He graduated from the Zion Schools at the College Building in 1932 and from Lake Forest College in 1936. Winfield was a member of Christ Community Church of Zion since 1925. He worked at Burroughs Adding Machine Company from 1937 until 1943. He entered the military service in 1941 and served 18 months in Europe with the 28th Infantry Division. He was discharged November 1943 with the rank of First Sgt. At Camp Shelby, Mississippi. While in service he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He married his first wife Jerry Romp in 1941 and his second wife Hazel Nogle in 1997. Both have preceded him death. Winfield was President of Reed-Randle Motors of Waukegan and President of Reed-Randle Properties. He was a lifelong member of Waukegan Rotary Club, served as Chairman of the Board and Director of Zion State Bank, was treasurer of Waukegan Y.M.C.A. and served as a Director of Zion Hospital, Rolling Hills Nursing Home, and North Skokie Drainage District. Survivors include his two children Richard D. (Karen A. McCann) Reed of Flagler Beach FL and Penella S. (John) Reed-Sacco of Pound Ridge, NY; four grandchildren Traci (Greg) Indlecoffer, Michelle (Greg) Storm, Cami (Joseph) Leuppino, and Nicole (James) Riess; eight great-grandchildren Hannah, Tessah, and Ross Indlecoffer, Gabe and Libby Storm, Grayson Leuppino, and Ellie and Jack Riess; and one brother Marlin D. (Donna) Reed of Lake Forest, IL. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jerry; his second wife, Hazel; and one sister and her husband, Marciel (Paul) Dunnick. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 6, 2011, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 7th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Christ Community Church in his memory have been suggested.
