Obituary of Marian Shumaker

Marian "Randi" Shumaker of Winthrop Harbor, IL passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Arbor View Nursing Home surrounded by her family. She was born August 29, 1922 in North Chicago, IL and had been a resident of Winthrop Harbor for the past fifty years. Randi was a wonderful cook and homemaker, entertaining for the many friends who visited her home. Her career included part-time positions with the Zion- Benton News, Fotomat and Leader Hardware in Zion. Her greatest joy was caring for her granddaughter and other children placed in her care over the years. She was also a friend to animals, rescuing and caring for many abandoned animals throughout her life. Later in life, she enjoyed ballroom dancing with her dear friend Larry Ceskowski. On November 23, 1939, she married Lawrence Shumaker in Lake County. They moved thru-out the United States while he served as a pilot and trainer in the US Air Force during World War II. After his retirement from Outboard Marine Corporation, they continued their love of traveling in their motorhome visiting all of the lower 48 states. He preceded her in death in 1994. Survivors include her daughter, Dawn (Bruce) McLain and granddaughter Mallory McLain all of Winthrop Harbor; brothers Robert (Irene) Riley and Harold Riley, both of North Chicago, niece Donna (John) Adams of Waukegan and nephew Dennis Riley of North Chicago. She is also survived by her special friend, Lawrence Ceskowski of Pleasant Prairie, WI and her kitty, Tux. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence W. Shumaker and her parents, Margaret and Harold Riley. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday May 22, 2008 at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park
