Obituary of Sarah Maynard

Sarah Maynard "Ellen" Sarah "Ellen" Maynard, 96, a long time resident of Zion, died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Rolling Hills Manor in Zion. Ellen was born November 17, 1912, and grew up on a farm in southern Illinois. After graduating from high school, she was able to go on to college and obtain her degree in English. Mr. Hubert Pearce, a past Principal at Zion Benton Township High School, encouraged her to come to Zion and join his staff. She taught English at Zion for many years, and was a mentor for many student teachers. After retiring from teaching, she worked as bookkeeper for the former Dan Miller Ford in Zion. Long before recycling became popular , Ellen established a local program. In later years, even though her eyesight was failing, she still enjoyed gardening and preserving jams and jellies. She also enjoyed baking and sharing her bread with neighbors. Ellen was a faithful member of the United Memorial United Methodist Church in Zion and was a prayer warrior. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church, 2935 Sheridan Rd., Zion, Ill.
