Obituary of Dorothy Cvetnick

Dorothy M. Cvetnick, 84, of Waukegan, IL, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 11, 2009, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born August 11, 1925 in Waukegan and married Albert "Al" Cvetnick on September 14, 1946 at Mother of God Church in Waukegan. Dorothy was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church in Beach Park She was retired from Fansteel Metallurgical in North Chicago. Her various memberships include, St. Anne's K.S.K.J., SNPJ Society #14 in Waukegan, Miraculous Medal of Mary, and 25 years with TOPS. Dorothy was deeply religious. A talented and creative woman she was awarded a scholarship to Art School when she was younger. Dorothy was a gifted craft maker, including the abilities to carve wood and create costumes for her family and others for school events. She loved to "magically" decorate her home for holidays. Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with a vibrant personality. She was fond of feeding racoons, making a home for stray animals, a gifted baker of potica (a gift she taught to two generations), and she was proud of her Slovenian heritage, carrying on many traditions such as blessing the house at Christmas, blessing of Easter baskets, and celebration of the feast of St. Nicholas. In 1976 she traveled with her husband to Slovenia to visit their families and included a stop at Lourdes. Lastly, she was an avid gardener with a love for flowers and house plants. Survivors include daughters, Dorothy "Dee" (Donald) Stratmoen of Zion, IL, Linda Timm of Park City, IL, and Alene "AL" (Tom) Backis of Beach Park, IL; grandchildren, Lisa Timm, Katrina (Kevin) Johnson, Amanda Stafford, Anthony "Tony" Timm, and Michael Stratmoen; 12 great-grandchildren, brother, John (Rita) Kink of Park City, IL; two nieces and a nephew; special "adopted" children Teri Usher of FL, and Aaron Escamilla of TX; numerous God-children and a "special" God-child, Carol Abraham (and her family) of Winthrop Harbor, IL; "special" friend, Betty Smith; loving companion, Raymond Appelt; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in September of 2008; grandson, Glen Albert Timm; life-long friend, Mary Sorensen (nee Grgas); her parents, John and Mary Kink; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Johanna Cvetnick. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 Wadsworth Rd., Beach Park. Interment will private for the family. Memorial donations are suggested to either, Our Lady of Humility Church or to Save-A- Pet.
