Edward "Ed" J. Meyers, 60, of Winthrop Harbor, IL, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at home, surrounded by his family.
Ed was born May 29, 1949, in Chicago, and was a 1967 graduate of Proviso West Township High School and a 1971 graduate of Northern Illinois University. He then went on to obtain his Masters Degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Ed married April Toman on October 14, 1967, in Schaumburg, IL. He served Zion-Benton Township High School for 33 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. Ed belonged to the Illinois Athletic Directors Association. Through his teaching and coaching, he touched many students lives. He was a mentor to many. In his early years, Ed enjoyed running cross-country and track. He was an avid White Sox fan and liked softball, golfing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, April; son, Edward Joseph (Nikki) Meyers of Twin Lakes, WI; daughter, Heather (Roger) Meyers-Grum of Lake Bluff, IL; the "Apples of My Eye", grandchildren, Savannah Meyers and Julia and Levi Grum; also surviving are his father and mother, Edward F. and Marjorie Meyers of North Aurora, IL; sister Marjorie (George) Punter of Centerville, OH; brother, Timothy (Fabiano) Meyers of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; niece, Lara Punter of Dayton, Ohio; and nephew, George (Susan) Punter of Louisville, KY.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Missionary Church, 1415 27th St., Zion, with Pastor Doug Carlson, officiating. Following the service there will be a gathering for all at the Zion-Benton Township High School cafeteria. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for a future scholarship fund in Edward's name have been suggested by the family.
