David George Wedekind, passed away Monday, October 22, 2018 at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. He was 95 years old.
David was born on June 6, 1923 in Zion, Illinois to parent’s George and Reta Wedekind. He was part of the second class to graduate from Zion Benton High School in 1941.
David married his love, Doris Bennett, on December 4, 1943 in Kenosha, WI.
David was a lifelong member of Christ Community Church in Zion, member of The Zion Benton Kiwanis Club, President of The Zion Exchange Club, President of The Zion Chamber of Commerce and part of a mens’ Bridge group.
As a young man, David was a pilot/crop duster. He was also a manager of Field’s Menswear, advertising sales for WKZN radio, General Manager of the former Zion Benton News and former owner of Rigss Promotions, Inc. He and his beloved wife provided a ministry at a local nursing home for 23 years.
David always put church and family first. He enjoyed boating, golfing and playing bridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Reta Wedekind and his brother Jerry and wife Joan.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 75 years, Doris (Bennett), sons David Brian (Jeanne) of Rochester, MN, Rich (Donna) of Marietta, GA and daughter Jan Suthard (David) of Zion, IL. His nephews: Larry (Deborah) and Jeff (Katherine). His eight grandchildren: Michelle (Scott), Julie (Chris), Melissa (Daniel), Sherry (Chris), Heather (Daniel), Leigh Anne (Adam), Amy (Robert), David (Renee); and 16 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 10:30AM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00AM to celebrate David’s life at Christ Community Church, 2500 Memorial Drive, Zion, IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials in David’s name to Matthew’s Hope Foundation (matthewshope.org) or Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion, IL 60099.
