Obituary of Laurel Jean Hansford

Laurel Jean Hansford, 92, of Winthrop Harbor passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 6, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. Laurel was a lifetime resident of Winthrop Harbor. She graduated from Zion Benton Township High School and attended the Grant Hospital Nursing Program in Chicago, IL where she was in the last graduating class under the G.I. Bill WWII. She later earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from the University of St. Francis in Joliet. On August 21, 1948, she married Walter R. Hansford, and together they shared 68 years of marriage. Laurel was a member of the Eastern Star, Women of the Moose and the Dunes Land Garden Club. Her greatest passion in life was being a Nurse; she worked for many years as an Industrial nurse and served as Director of Lake County’s Tuberculosis Clinic. Even after retirement, Laurel kept her Nursing license current. Laurel was also an animal lover. Laurel is survived by her children; Stephen (Kate) Hansford, Kimberly Hansford, Kristie Hansford and Valerie (Keith) Rummel; nephew, Rick Fitton; and niece, Leslie Fitton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; parents, Walter and Hattie; sister, Lois Fitton; and cousins, Jim Cooprider and Carol Cooprider Martin. Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL 60099 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Journeycare in Laurel’s name.
