Costandino 'Gus' Phillips

1970 — August 6, 2020

Costandino ‘Gus’ Nickolas Phillips, 50, of Zion, IL passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 6, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Gus was born on January 10, 1970 in Waukegan, IL, the son of Matina Gherondas and Nickolas Phillips. Gus graduated from Zion Benton High School. It was there that he met his soulmate, Jennifer Garvin; they were married on August 16, 1997, and every day since it was obvious to everyone who met them that they were deeply in love. Their marriage has served as a testament that true love exists and a perfect example of how one should honor vows that were made. Gus was the perfect example of a husband and father to his family; Gus genuinely cared for those around him and we should all take a page out of Gus' book. Gus was an extremely proud father of his daughter Lexi (age 18) and son Sebastian (age 14). He joyfully took on the role of number one fan of his Hockey State Champion son, Sebastian and National Synchronized Figure Skating Champion daughter, Lexi. Gus and Jen were fortunate enough to be able to support each other, both personally and professionally, throughout their marriage including when they co- founded First Mate Yacht Detailing and when Gus founded his 2nd company, Colorful Fire. Gus served as a source of strength and love for many. He was the friendliest guy you ever met and one of the nicest people you've ever had the privilege to know. In fact, its difficult to find anyone that didn't consider Gus one of their best friends. He served as the unofficial 'Mayor' of Yogi Bear Campground for nine years, and was always supportive and encouraging to his loving family, traveling all over to support Lexi and Sebastian. Gus is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer; daughter, Lexi; and son, Sebastian. He was the cherished, youngest sibling of Theodore Phillips, Shelly Wilson, Tammy Boots and Tim Purcell. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matina Gherondas and Nickolas Phillips; and step-father, Don Purcell. There will be a Celebration of Gus's life at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Dr. Zion, IL 60099 on Thursday, August 13th from 4-7 pm., with a Funeral Service following immediately after. The Phillips Family would like to extend their love and appreciation to Dena Porter, Gus's nurse, who was with us for most of his journey, and also our friends and family who showed loved and support. In lieu of flowers, Gus family is suggesting donations to: The Glioblastoma Foundation, P.O. Box 62066, Durham, NC 27715.
