Matthew Turina

1935 — January 29, 2021

On Friday, January 29, 2021, Matthew Turina, loving husband and father of three, passed away in his sleep at the age of 85. Matthew was born on September 5th, 1935 in Smrika, Croatia (Yugoslavia) to Petar and Marija(Kruzic) Turina. Matthew immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 after the completion of World War 2, where his father Petar had fought for the American army in the D-Day invasion and his mother fought Nazi's in Croatia while separated thru 7 yrs of war. A graduate of Lane Tech HS in 1954, he received his Engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in May of 1958. From there he went on to be a Product Designer and later Product Manager for 37 years until retirement at Tuthill Pump in Alsip Il. On May 29, 1965, he married Sharon Baumgartner. They raised two sons, Todd and Jeff, and one daughter, Tracy (Johnson). After the death of his wife Sharon in 1993, he had a second beautiful marriage to Sue Adams(Harbin) on April 26, 1997. Matthew is remembered for his avid reading, sarcastic wit ,stubborn disposition(inherited trait) as well as a passionate love of most sports , especially Golf. It is surmised that Matthew passed away in his sleep to avoid another especially long "Croatian Goodbye". Matthew is survived by his wife Sue, his children, Todd, Jeff, Tracy, step children Wanda Warden and Ed Adams, adored grandchildren Jarod, Jaelyn, Grayson, Hawk, Eddie Jr. and Bethany , his beloved sisters, Catherine Egloff and Blanche Burich as well as several spouses, three nieces, and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Petar, and his mother, Mary and first wife Sharon. Due to covid epidemic, an immediate private family funeral service will be held at the Congdon Funeral home, 3012 Sheridan Rd in Zion IL 60099, with plans of a larger Celebration of Life BBQ to be held later in Summer when we can all be together. In lieu of flowers, donations may please be sent to American Lung Association.
