Genevieve Emma Peters, 104, of Zion, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 3, 2006 at Rolling Hills Manor Nursing Home in Zion. Genevieve was born in Chicago on April 23, 1902, the daughter of the late William and Bertha Valkenaar. She was the last surviving member of her family. She truly lived a life of serving her Lord and helping others. She worked for period of time at the Mowen Tailor Shop in the old Zion Department Store before it was destroyed by fire. Her father, William, worked in the dry goods department. Later, She helped her husband, Robert, run and manage Peters Paint Store on South Sheridan Road, in Zion for many years. In later years, she worked part-time at the Zion Post Office, where she would get up early in morning and drive a vehicle to pick up mail at the various drop boxes, and also sorted mail, amongst other duties. she was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1994, after 70 years of marriage; grandsons David Alan Peters and Tim Fisher; brothers William, Elmer, Raymond and Rowland; sisters Mildred (Erwin) Craig; and infant sister Louella.
