Doris Jean Peterson

1936 — February 20, 2022

Doris Peterson of Zion, Illinois, moved to heaven peacefully on February 20, 2022, with her family by her bedside. Doris was born on January 9, 1936, in Sterling, Illinois. She graduated from Milledgeville High School in 1954, then attended Manchester College in Indiana, where she met Larry Peterson. They married after graduation in 1958, then moved to Chicago where he attended dental school. During part of Larry’s enlistment in the Navy, they lived in California. There they attended a church that faithfully preached salvation through Christ’s death on the cross. Doris made a decision to trust Jesus for the forgiveness of her sins, and to follow Him as directed in the Bible. She and Larry returned to Zion where Larry established his dental practice. Doris was always involved in the church she attended, teaching Sunday School, visiting shut-ins, sharing with others the gospel message of Jesus, serving as a deaconess and at Vacation Bible School. She is especially known for her commitment to prayer. She cared for her neighbors and offered hospitality to countless people. Her favorite times were spent with her children and grandchildren. Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, Larry Peterson; a daughter, Denise (Patrick) Zaman, and son, Kevin (Karin) Peterson; grandchildren, Anna Peterson, Samuel Peterson, Kelly Peterson, Nicholas Peterson, Julia Zaman, and Andrew Zaman; brother, Stanley Stover; sisters-in-law, Janet Storey, Marilyn Borden, Marjorie Monaghan, and brother-in- law, Craig Peterson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Orion and Lois Stover; father-and mother-in-law, Clifford and Evelyn Peterson; brother-in-law, Loren Storey, and sister-in-law, Mary Stover. A visitation will be held on March 5 from 9:30 am -11:00 am at Christ Community Church, 2500 Dowie Memorial Drive, Zion. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 at the church with Pastor Mike McDowell officiating.
