Shirley R. Michael (Sullivan) 95, of Beach Park, IL passed away on September 1, 2023. She was born in Chicago, IL the daughter of John and Cecelia (Busser) Sullivan.
She graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Chicago, IL and married her husband John Michael at St. Timothy Church on September 24, 1949. She worked for Fansteel as a shop steward, contract negotiating team member and office of IAM 1777. She retired from Fansteel in 1990 after 40 years achieving the position of chief inspector, where she continued to stay active in her union, the AFL-CIO. Shirley was very active in her community as a volunteer worker, president of IAM Senior Retirees Club and RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program). Shirley was an active member of Our Lady of Humility Catholic church, she volunteered with the Co-Ed for Seniors group,
active in Red Hat Club
and served on the church's bereavement committee. She also served for many years as Chaplain of American Legion Sharvin Post 397 in North Chicago, IL. She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid traveler.
Shirley is survived by her four children, John (Josette) Michael, Christine Corbett, Patrick Michael, Jean (Ed) Tews; grandchildren, Jessica Corbett, Aaron Corbett, David (Stacy) Michael, Doug (Niki) Michael, Daniel Michael, Nathan (Tina) Tews, Neil (Kim) Tews, Sarah (Jordan) Marcelain; twelve great-grandchildren; brother, Billy Sullivan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her late husband who passed in 1995 John Michael; brothers, Jack Sullivan, Johnny Sullivan; and sister Lorraine Kretschmer.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd. Zion, IL 60099. Burial will follow at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, IL.
