Obituary of Leonard Polum

Leonard "Lenny" Polum, 78, of Waukegan, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Rolling Hills Manor Nursing Home in Zion. Lenny was born January 12, 1928 in Wausau, Wisconsin. He was a Veteran having served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of Amvets Post 35 and Sad Sacks Post 54, both of Waukegan. Lenny was awarded Amvet of the Year for Post 35 in 1993-94 and again in 2002-2003. He was a member of St. Dismas Church of Waukegan and he retired from Johnson Motors after 30 years of service. Lenny was also an avid fisherman and he enjoyed tending to his garden, working around the house and he took great pride in his lawn. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty; children, Rick (Brenda) Polum of Union Grove, Wisconsin and Debby (Jeff) Barton of North Ogden, Utah; grandchildren, Kris Polum, Kim Polum, Jason Barton, Jeff (Kim) Barton, Chris (Cheryl) Barton and Jennie Barton; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Marion Ostrowski of Chicago, Virginia Burclaw and Dolores (Russ) Figie, both of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Eleanor (Edward) Kutella, Janice (Dave) Stoltenberg and Emmett (Marion) Polum, all of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by mother and father, Rose and Nick Polum; and one brother, Clarence Polum. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois. Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville. Visitation will be Friday, January 5th, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, and again on Saturday morning at St. Dismas Church from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Lenny's name to aid American service Veterans.
