Gene Davis Borop, 63, of Antioch, Illinois, died on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at his home following a long illness.
Gene was born December 17, 1943 in Princeton, Illinois and grew up in Walnut, Illinois. He was a graduate of Western Illinois University and received his Masters Degree from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He began his teaching career at Zion-Benton Township High School in 1967 where he also coached football and track until retiring in 2000. He continued coaching track at Warren High School in Gurnee through 2006. Coaching was his lifelong passion but he was also a fisherman, golfer, an avid Green Bay Packer fan, a fan of country music and he enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 39 years, Sharon; his loving children Tim (Tammie) Borop and Jill (Tim) Mattner both of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; he was proud "PaPa" to his five granddaughters Kayla, Brooklyn, Kelsey, Reese and Teagan; and his fond sister Linda Hamilton of Lexington, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents Marion and Alice Borop; and his brother-in-law Richard Hamilton.
Visitation will be Friday, January 26, 2007 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. A memorial service celebrating Gene's life will be held on Saturday, January 27th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home with Gene's cousin, the Rev. Otis Borop, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or, Lance Armstrong's Livestrong Foundation have been suggested.
