Obituary of Albert Berens

Albert P. "Al" Berens, 88, of Winthrop Harbor, IL, died on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at the Terrace Nursing Home in Waukegan, IL. Al was born October 28, 1923, in Chicago, IL, and married Florence Glowacki on October 18, 1945, in Vallejo, CA. He was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church in Beach Park. Al was a veteran of World War II (including six War Patrols) and served with and retired from the United States Navy after 22 ½ years of service. He also retired from OMC in Waukegan after 23 years of employment as an electrician. Al was a member of the Navy Club (Ship #40) of Kenosha, WI, the Submarine Veterans of World War II, Northeast, Wisconsin, the American Legion Post 1943 of Winthrop Harbor, IL, and was Past President of the Winthrop Harbor Baseball Association. He coached and umpired baseball in Winthrop Harbor for over 20 years, was an avid bowler, and loved being with children and animals. Survivors include his beloved wife of 66 years, Florence; eight children; Mary Athena Berens of Portland, OR, Thomas (Heidi) Berens of Foster City, CA, Barbara Conrad of Tucson, AZ, Joanne Berens of Green Bay, Wi, James (Patricia) Berens of Beaver Creek, OR, Michael (Lynn) Berens of Beach Park, IL,William Berens of Wadsworth, IL, and Daniel (Karen) Berens of Dousman, WI; 12 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 7, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL, followed by a Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorial Donations are suggested to VITAS Hospice.
