Obituary of Marty Berry

Martha Ann Mitchell was born on July 14, 1930 and passed peacefully on October 15, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Marty graduated from Topeka High School in 1949. She married Roy Berry in August, 1949 and they shared 46 years together. A highlight of their early years together was working on the Potawatomie Indian Reservation in Mayetta, Kansas.

As a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, she dedicated 51 years to teaching and coaching swimming to multiple generations. She taught her last student at age 89.

Marty spent 18 years copying braille books for the blind. She and her husband taught line dancing for the Zion Park District and the Ambassador Club. From the age of 13, she loved singing in church choirs.

Marty leaves behind six children – Jane Berry, Judy (Randy) Shay, Ed (Jeanne) Berry, Dave Berry, Sue (Mike) Jaworek, Carol (Louie) Jaskulka. She is also survived by six grandchildren – Laurie (Jim) Haulenbeek, Frank (Barbara) Koski, Jackie (Wes) Whitten, Jenny Jaworek, Wayne (Tabitha) Jaworek, Joshua Jaskulka and five great-grandchildren – Sean Whitten, Katie Koski, Ayla Haulenbeek, Steven Jaworek, Cayden Jaworek.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother, husband Roy, and her granddaughter Anna Faith.

Memorial Services will be held at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 2935 Sheridan Rd Zion, IL 60099 on October 21, 2023. Visitation is open from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Celebration of Life Services will begin at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Mayetta, KS or to the Memorial United Methodist Church.
