Obituary of Alma Cole

Alma B. Cole, 90, of North Chicago, Illinois, was born on July 22,1933 in Greeneville, TN where she was baptized into the Presbyterian church in 1933. She passed away on January 22, 2024 at Integrated Palliative and Hospice Care in Libertyville, IL.

 

Alma is survived by her two children, Sharron Morrison (Colin) of North Chicago, IL and Joseph M. Cole (Desiree) of Waukegan, IL; her grandchildren, Andrea Morrison of Waukegan, IL, Robert Morrison of North Chicago, Melissa Blanchard (Sean) of Waukegan, IL, Joie McKnight (Chris) of Beach Park, IL, Joseph R. Cole (Valeria) of Gurnee, IL, Megan-Richelle Cole of Summerville, SC, Patrick A. Cole (Yesenia) of Fountain, CO, great-grandchildren (21), great, great-grandchildren (8), and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Cole who she married in 1953; her parents, Robert and Ernestine Broyles and her siblings: Aretta Carson, Louise McCoy, Lindon B. Chapman, Robert A. Broyles Jr., Nita L. Nixon, Mary B. Tyler, Yvonne K. Wallace, and Haskell Y. Broyles.

 

Alma moved from Greeneville, TN to IL, met and fell in love with Joseph and they were married in Waukegan, IL on November 7, 1953, until his death on February 24, 1983.

 

Alma loved crafting, reading, volunteering, and gardening. She loved to tend to her special garden that her husband Joseph planted for her. She had a beautiful garden full of many flowers, bushes, and shrubs. She especially loved her wild flowers! Each flower, bush, and shrub had its own special charm. Her garden was a sanctuary of blessings, beauty, harmony, and love.   

 

Alma worked as a physical therapy aide at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, IL until she retired in the early 1990s. Alma was also a very active member of Trinity United Lutheran Church of Waukegan, IL and the community. She served on the altar guild team, the local church board of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (W/ELCA), food pantry project, special events committee, member of the Sisters of Eve Circle, volunteered with Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS) of Lake County, IL, and a W/ELCA Metro Chicago Synod conference participant for many years. 

 

All of her children were raised Lutheran and continue to attend church as a family. They are five (5) generations strong in the Lutheran tradition and it all started with Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church, North Chicago, IL of which she became a member in 1966 until they merged in 1993 with Trinity United Lutheran Church, Waukegan, IL.

Interment will follow the service and will be at 

Northshore Garden of Memories, 1801 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL 60064
