Obituary of Walter Maki

Walter Maki of Beach Park IL. age 95, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014. He was born in Rock, MI on April 18, 1919 to Hemming and Liisa (Hakalahti) Maki. He left Michigan's upper peninsula shortly after the great depression and worked in Detroit where he studied auto body repair. He then moved to the Waukegan area and married the former Ruth L. Niemela on July 12, 1941. Walter spent over 50 years as an auto body man in Lake County and finally retired from Wenben Buick in Lake Forest in 1994. He enjoyed his retirement, spending time with his family, both in the area and in the U.P. of Michigan. He was a lifelong member of St. Marks Lutheran Church. SURVIVORS: His loving companion Lucille Tolonen; sons, Bruce Maki of Bristol WI, John (Julie) Maki of Nampa ID, Robert (Kathleen) Maki of Lindenhurst; and six grandchildren: Scott Maki, Eliisa (Thomas) Quinn, Benjamin (Jacki Moriarty) Maki, Patrick, Colin and Emma Maki and a niece Verna (Vercoe) Mattern of Sault St Marie, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth; his parents Hemming and Liisa; brothers Earl, Vaino and Toivo Maki, sister, Laina (Maki) Vercoe and a niece Joyce Bloomquist. SERVICES Friday, May 2, 2014 - visitation 9:00-11:00 AM, funeral follows at 11:00 AM, at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 3350 N. Delany Rd, Waukegan, IL 60087, Pastor Jeffrey Koth officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Libertyville, IL. MEMORIAL: In lieu of flowers please consider giving to the St. Marks Lutheran Church or the COOL Food Pantry.
