Obituary of Gwendolyn Wimer

Gwendolyn Hill Wimer, 83, of Winthrop Harbor, died on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at her home in the presence of her family. She was born December27, 1924, in Zion, Il, the eldest of three children to Thomas Orvin (T.O.) and Florence Hill. Gwen attended school in Zion, graduating from Zion-Benton Township High School in 1942. She worked for many years as a secretary at Abbott Laboratories until the birth of her daughter in 1964. In later years, she also worked for the Winthrop Harbor School District and the Zion Park District, where she retired in 1988. Gwen was also a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mrs. Wimer was a lifetime member of Christ Community Church (formerly Christian Catholic Church) where she taught Sunday School for many years and served on the funeral luncheon committee. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, David C. Wimer; daughter, Beth (Brian) McLain of Winthrop Harbor, 2 granddaughters, Katie Elizabeth and Sarah Catherine McLain, who were the joys of her life. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Gordon Hill of Gurnee and Gerard (Dorothy) Hill of Waunakee, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister-in-law, Arlene Hill. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park in Zion. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time os service at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to the Camp Zion Ministry of Christ Community Church.
